**Pakistani Ex-PM Imran Khan Returned to Jail After Brief Hospital Visit**
Former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, was returned to Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail shortly after a medical checkup at a private hospital in Islamabad. This move follows a recent order from Pakistan's Supreme Court, which mandated that Khan be transferred to Shifa International Hospital for a medical evaluation.
The Supreme Court's directive was issued on Tuesday, allowing Khan to receive medical attention until September 16. However, Khan was taken to the hospital just after midnight on Friday, past the court's stipulated deadline. This delay prompted the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, which Khan founded, to threaten legal action against the government for contempt of court.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar reported on social media platform X that a team of medical professionals, including an ophthalmologist, a cardiologist, and a general physician, assessed Khan's health. Following the examination, the doctors deemed him medically fit to remain in custody, leading to his swift return to prison after only a few hours at the hospital.
Khan's legal team had expressed concerns about his health, claiming that his condition had worsened while incarcerated, particularly citing significant vision loss in his right eye. In response to these claims, the government appealed to the Supreme Court to reassess its order, arguing that medical reports indicated Khan did not require immediate treatment.
The security measures surrounding Khan's hospital visit were extensive, with hundreds of personnel deployed along the approximately 30-kilometer route from the prison to the hospital. The area was heavily secured during his brief stay, and despite the late hour, supporters of Khan gathered along the route to cheer for him as his convoy passed.
Khan's legal troubles stem from a conviction related to the sale of state gifts, a charge he has consistently denied. He and his supporters assert that the legal actions against him are politically motivated, aimed at hindering his return to the political arena. The PTI party, which continues to maintain a significant support base, has been barred from participating in the upcoming elections scheduled for 2024.
