“For more than three decades, these organizations have played a vital role in defending Palestinian children, including in the Israeli military courts, and in documenting grave violations against Palestinian children at the hands of Israeli forces,” the committee stated. The absence of these groups, it cautioned, could lead to a further erosion of protections for Palestinian children, allowing violations of their rights to continue without accountability.
The statement, issued by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), detailed the various tactics employed to undermine the work of human rights organizations. These tactics include military raids, travel bans, personal financial sanctions, threats of arrest, and destruction of records. Such measures have made it increasingly difficult for these organizations to operate safely and effectively, thus jeopardizing the support they provide to children and families in need.
The committee urged the international community to hold Israeli authorities accountable for the attacks on Palestinian human rights defenders and called for the lifting of restrictions imposed on humanitarian individuals and groups.
