**Paphos Animal Shelter to Be Completed Within 18 Months**
Paphos, Cyprus – A new modern animal shelter is set to be established in Paphos, with an allocation of €250,000 for its construction. The shelter is expected to be completed within the next 18 months, as announced by the animal welfare commissioner, Elias Myrianthous, following a meeting with acting Paphos mayor, Angelos Onesiforos.
The initiative aims to address the ongoing issue of stray animals in the region, which has largely been managed through private and voluntary efforts. Myrianthous emphasized that existing infrastructure across the four municipalities in Paphos has proven inadequate for effectively tackling the problem of stray animals, necessitating the establishment of a dedicated facility.
The initial proposal for the shelter's location was a state-owned plot of land in the Anarita community. However, this site faced significant opposition from the Paphos community union and local authorities, prompting a reevaluation of potential locations. Myrianthous stated that current efforts are focused on overcoming any obstacles to ensure the timely progression of the project, while also remaining open to alternative sites for the shelter.
During the meeting, Onesiforos acknowledged the seriousness of the stray animal situation in Paphos and expressed optimism that a collaborative approach among all stakeholders could lead to a successful resolution. The establishment of a modern animal shelter is seen as a crucial step towards providing a definitive solution to the challenges posed by stray animals in the area.
As the project moves forward, the local community and animal welfare advocates will be closely monitoring developments, hoping that the new shelter will enhance the welfare of animals and improve the overall management of strays in Paphos.
