**Paphos Launches Daily Sea Patrols to Combat Marine Pollution**
Paphos, Cyprus – In a proactive effort to address marine pollution, the Paphos municipality has initiated a four-month programme aimed at monitoring and responding to pollution along the coasts of Paphos and Yeroskipou. Announced on Monday, the initiative will see daily sea patrols conducted by a specialized contractor, who will deploy trained staff and boats to monitor the waters seven days a week.
The patrols will operate in both morning and afternoon shifts, covering areas close to popular beaches as well as open water. The primary goal of these patrols is to quickly identify and address pollution incidents before they can spread and cause further environmental harm. Staff will be on the lookout for various types of pollution, including oil slicks, sewage, and debris floating in the sea.
When pollution is detected, the contractor will immediately take action to contain and remove the contaminants using specialized equipment and waste collection tools. This rapid response is intended to minimize the impact of pollution on the marine ecosystem and the local community.
In addition to immediate response efforts, the contractor will collaborate with relevant authorities to ensure that each incident is documented. This includes maintaining records and photographs of pollution events, which will be crucial for ongoing monitoring and future prevention strategies.
The total cost of the programme is estimated at €50,000, excluding VAT. Funding for the initiative has been secured through a combination of sources, with the ports authority contributing €40,000. The remaining funds will be provided by the municipalities of Paphos and Yeroskipou.
