**Paphos Man Remanded in Opium Poppy Case**
A 38-year-old resident of Paphos has been remanded for eight days following his arrest for the alleged importation of dried poppy pods. The remand order was issued by the Paphos district court on Friday, just one day after the suspect was detained.
The case began when police uncovered evidence during an investigation into a package that had arrived at Larnaca airport. This package contained approximately half a kilogram of dried poppy pods, which are known for their association with opium production. The police drug squad, known as Ykan, subsequently stopped the suspect while he was riding a motorcycle in Paphos. During a search, authorities discovered 1 gram of powder that is suspected to have originated from the dried poppy pods.
The remand of the suspect is intended to facilitate ongoing investigations into the matter. This incident is part of a broader crackdown by Ykan on drug importation and trafficking, particularly concerning products derived from opium poppies.
On the preceding Thursday, police had also issued eight-day remand orders for five individuals after they seized a significant quantity of dried poppy pods, totaling 20.78 kilograms. This series of arrests and seizures is part of a larger investigation into an alleged opium ring that reportedly operated via the social media platform TikTok.
In a related development, a 35-year-old man was arrested in Nicosia on Sunday after being found in possession of 10 kilograms of dried poppy pods, further highlighting the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address drug-related activities in the region.
The Paphos case underscores the increasing vigilance of authorities in combating drug trafficking and the importation of controlled substances in Cyprus. As investigations continue, more details are expected to emerge regarding the operations of the suspected opium ring and the individuals involved.
