The vessel, the passenger ferry Express owned by Filo Jet, was about two kilometres from Kyrenia port when it capsized. According to Turkish Cypriot website Kıbrıs Postası, the incident occurred about three nautical miles off Kyrenia, with a total of 279 people on board. Reports indicate that there are injured people, although the exact number and the severity of their injuries have not yet been confirmed. Ambulances from the Turkish Cypriot authorities have been placed on standby to receive and transport those rescued. Following the incident, three “Coast Guard” vessels and three private boats were mobilised, while ambulances and police forces rushed to the area. Initial reports describe the vessel as a catamaran. Claims have also been made that the material used in its construction may not have been suitable for maritime use. Reports further stated that the vessel was old and that its fibreglass structure suffered serious damage, causing it to split in two quickly. Information about the exact number of passengers and any injuries has not yet been confirmed. Rescue operations and investigations are continuing.
