Residents have expressed growing frustration and are calling for immediate solutions, while booking cancellations have also been recorded as visitors become aware of the water problems. Neo Chorio deputy mayor Georgios Neophytou told philenews that the immediate disruption has lasted for around four to six weeks. “With the local government reform, responsibility for the water supply passed to the District Local Government Organisation, meaning that we, as a municipality, cannot intervene,” he said. Neophytou stressed, however, that problems with the community’s water supply have existed for more than two years. “We wanted to give them some time, but unfortunately the situation is getting worse.” What is causing the problem Asked what was behind the disruption, Neophytou said officials had told them it was linked to the ageing network and water pressure. “There is a major leak in the system which has not yet been found,” he said. He added that the biggest problem was in the centre of the community. “A family called me today and told me they have had no water for three days,” he said. Neophytou said the situation was damaging the community’s reputation because word had spread about the water supply problems. “Tourists are cancelling their bookings at villas and hotels. People hear that they will come on holiday and will not have water,” he said. He said more than 200 residents were being affected. Asked about claims that a hotel in the area was responsible for the problem, Neophytou rejected them, saying the issue was broader. “There are daily faults in the village which are repaired, but the water loss continues,” he said. ‘Household appliances are being damaged’ Neophytou also said residents had complained that household appliances, including washing machines and dishwashers, were being damaged because of the unexpected water cuts. He also raised the possibility that some people could be stealing water, saying this should be investigated. “Those sitting in the offices need to come here and see the problems people are facing,” he said. Neophytou reiterated that the problems began after the Paphos District Local Government Organisation took over responsibility for the water supply. “We said we should give them time to get organised, but two years have passed and the problems are getting worse. People are being left unable to wash,” he said. He added that residents were desperate and warned that they would take to the streets.
