**Perseid Meteor Shower to Illuminate Cyprus Skies in August**
Stargazers across Cyprus are in for a celestial treat this month as the Perseid meteor shower is set to peak on August 12 and 13. According to Chrysanthos Fakas, the deputy mayor of Nicosia and a noted astronomer, the meteor shower commenced on July 17 and will continue to grace the night skies until August 24.
The Perseids, renowned for their bright meteors, are named after the constellation Perseus, from which they appear to emanate. Fakas emphasized that the best viewing conditions will be during the peak nights, with the highest number of meteors visible. Observers are encouraged to look towards the north-eastern sky after 11 PM, when the radiant point rises higher, providing an optimal vantage point for viewing.
This year’s meteor shower is anticipated to be particularly spectacular, as the peak viewing night on August 12 will coincide with a moonless sky. This absence of moonlight will allow the meteors to stand out more prominently against the dark backdrop of the night sky, enhancing the viewing experience for astronomy enthusiasts.
In addition to the Perseid meteor shower, stargazers may have the opportunity to observe other celestial bodies during this time. The constellation of Scorpio, the prominent red star Antares, and the planet Venus will also be visible, adding to the richness of the night sky.
For those interested in a communal viewing experience, the Astronomical Society of Cyprus, in collaboration with the Cyprus Space Exploration Organisation and the Fakas School Observatory, is hosting a free astronomical evening. This event is scheduled for August 12 from 9 PM to 11 PM at the courtyard of the Church of Ayios Arsenios in Kyperounda. It presents a wonderful opportunity for both seasoned astronomers and casual observers to come together and enjoy the wonders of the universe.
As a side note, the month of August will also see the occurrence of the full moon, known as the Sturgeon Moon, on August 28. Additionally, a total solar eclipse will take place on August 12; however, it will not be visible from Cyprus.
