**Piece of SpaceX Rocket the Size of a School Bus Crashes into the Moon**
A four-tonne piece of debris from a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket has collided with the Moon, creating a new crater on the lunar surface. This event, which occurred early Wednesday, August 5, 2026, has been confirmed through tracking data by independent astronomers and space-tracking agencies.
The debris, which is approximately the size of a school bus, was the second stage of a Falcon 9 rocket that was launched in early 2025. The object struck the Moon near the Einstein Crater at an impressive speed of around 8,700 kilometers per hour (5,400 miles per hour). The force of the impact was equivalent to the explosion of roughly three tonnes of TNT.
Typically, rocket stages like this one are designed to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere, where they either burn up or land in remote ocean areas after completing their missions. However, over the course of 18 months, gravitational forces from the Sun, Earth, and Moon altered the rocket's trajectory, leading it to a collision course with the Moon. Julianna Scheiman, SpaceX's director of NASA science and Dragon programs, explained that the trajectory leading to the crash was unintentional but unavoidable, given the remaining fuel reserves of the vehicle.
“What has happened is essentially a mixture of solar activity and gravity forces have put it on a path toward the moon,” Scheiman stated during a press briefing.
In response to the collision, various orbital observation crafts, including NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and South Korea’s Danuri spacecraft, have adjusted their sensor suites to monitor the impact site. While the immediate flash of the impact will be obscured by daylight on the lunar surface, these orbiters are expected to survey the ejected dust plume and capture high-resolution images of the newly formed crater.
Space tracking expert Bill Gray commented on the incident, noting that it does not pose any immediate danger but highlights concerns regarding the management of space debris. “It does highlight a certain carelessness about how leftover space hardware is disposed of,” he remarked, adding that “things are getting crowded up there.”
This incident marks only the second known occurrence of discarded rocket debris accidentally crashing into the Moon. The first instance took place on March 4, 2022, when a piece of a Chinese Long March 3C rocket, launched in 2014, impacted the lunar far side, resulting in an unusual double crater.
As space exploration continues to expand, the issue of space debris has become increasingly significant. The collision with the Moon serves as a reminder of the challenges associated with managing the remnants of space missions and the potential consequences of unintentional impacts on celestial bodies.
