**PM Pledges Continued Support for Ukraine Ahead of Zelensky Visit**
In a show of solidarity, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has reaffirmed the country's unwavering support for Ukraine as he prepares to welcome President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday. This visit marks Zelensky's first official engagement with Burnham since he took office just a week ago, highlighting the strong ties between the two nations amid ongoing tensions in Eastern Europe.
The meeting will take place at a naval base, where Burnham is expected to announce the sharing of intellectual property related to the UK's innovative "Stone Cloak" electronic warfare system. This technology, which has been developed to enhance drone operations, will allow Ukraine to produce the equipment at scale, further bolstering its defense capabilities. The Stone Cloak electronic jammers, compact enough to fit in a tablet-sized device, are designed to block the detection of drones, a critical asset in modern warfare.
Burnham emphasized the UK's commitment to Ukraine, stating, "Britain stands with Ukraine, shoulder to shoulder, and our support remains unwavering. Russia should be in no doubt of our resolve, and we will not back down until we achieve long-lasting and just peace for Ukraine." He further noted that the Stone Cloak represents the best of British innovation, proven effective on the frontline, and essential for the security of both nations.
The Ministry of Defence has already supplied thousands of these devices to Ukrainian forces, significantly enhancing their operational capabilities. Following their deployment in Ukraine, the technology will be integrated into the UK's next generation of long-range weaponry, including Project Brakestop, which aims to develop low-cost cruise missiles.
During the visit, Burnham and Zelensky will also meet with over 200 Ukrainian military personnel who have been participating in a maritime exercise in the UK for the past three weeks. This exercise, known as Sea Breeze, focuses on strengthening warfighting capabilities and improving counter-mine measures in the Black Sea, an area of strategic importance given the ongoing conflict.
The UK's support for Ukraine has been consistent since Russia's invasion four years ago, with the government committing £25 billion in funding to assist in the country's defense efforts. In one of his first actions as Prime Minister, Burnham reached out to Zelensky, inviting him to visit the UK "at the earliest opportunity." Zelensky expressed his gratitude for the steadfast support from the UK, stating on social media, "I truly appreciate that the support for Ukraine and our people will remain steadfast."
Former Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who visited Kyiv shortly before Burnham took office, had announced additional funding of £255 million for Ukraine's defense during his final day in office. He was also awarded Ukraine's Order of Freedom for his efforts in supporting the nation.
Zelensky has voiced concerns about potential changes in leadership in Britain and France, acknowledging the uncertainty that comes with such transitions. However, he expressed confidence that the strong relations between Ukraine and the UK would endure, stating, "I hope we will never lose strong relations with the UK during or after the war." In response, Starmer assured him, "You won't."
