**Poland Eyes Spending Up to $4.4 Billion on Permanent U.S. Military Base**
Poland is considering a significant investment of up to 17 billion zloty (approximately $4.4 billion) to establish a permanent U.S. military base on its territory, according to the presidential National Security Bureau (BBN). This initiative is currently under discussion with U.S. officials and aims to create a facility capable of housing around 5,000 troops. The information was reported by the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita this week.
The proposal to host a permanent U.S. base, informally referred to as "Fort Trump," was initially made by Warsaw during President Donald Trump’s administration in 2018. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski confirmed that negotiations regarding the base are progressing, suggesting that a deal may soon be finalized.
Deputy Defense Minister Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka recently traveled to the United States to discuss the base, among other defense-related topics. She noted that the final decision regarding the establishment of the base ultimately rests with President Trump. However, she indicated that a decision is not expected until after a review of the posture of U.S. forces, which is anticipated to be completed in November or December.
Under optimal conditions, the BBN estimates that the base could be operational by 2029. The establishment of this base aligns with broader U.S. defense strategies, which have emphasized the need for European NATO members to increase their defense spending and assume greater responsibility in military matters, particularly in light of ongoing tensions in Eastern Europe.
Elbridge Colby, the U.S. Under Secretary of War for Policy, has described Poland as a “model ally,” reinforcing the importance of the relationship between the two nations. The U.S. currently maintains a permanent Army garrison and command headquarters in Poznan, Poland, although most of the approximately 10,000 U.S. troops stationed in the country are there on a rotational basis. There is potential for this number to increase to 15,000, with 5,000 troops stationed permanently at the proposed new base.
Poland has emerged as a staunch supporter of Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia, serving as a critical logistics hub for Western military aid. The country shares a border with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, which adds a layer of strategic significance to its military partnerships.
Tensions between Poland and Russia have escalated recently, particularly following statements from Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski, who asserted that Poland could swiftly defeat Russia in the event of a direct confrontation with NATO. His remarks drew a stern warning from Nikolay Patrushev, an aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who suggested that Poland could face dire consequences if it engaged militarily with Russia.
As discussions continue regarding the potential establishment of a permanent U.S. military base in Poland, the geopolitical landscape in Eastern Europe remains complex and fraught with tension.
