**Police Arrest 15 in Overnight Nationwide Operations**
In a concerted effort to bolster public safety and curb criminal activity, police across Cyprus conducted extensive overnight operations, resulting in the arrest of 15 individuals. These operations were part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing public order through targeted patrols in key urban areas.
According to a statement released by the police, the operations were designed to prevent serious crimes and ensure the safety of citizens. The police deployed organized patrols throughout the island, focusing on areas known for higher incidences of crime.
The arrests made during these operations encompassed a variety of offences. Charges included theft, illegal residence in Cyprus, public drunkenness, causing disturbances, carrying knives, illegal drug possession, possession of offensive weapons, and various traffic-related violations.
In addition to the arrests, police engaged in comprehensive vehicle checks, stopping a total of 571 vehicles and inspecting 769 occupants. These checks were part of the police's broader strategy to deter criminal behaviour and ensure compliance with the law.
The operations also included inspections of 47 premises, leading to five reports for various offences. Traffic enforcement was a significant focus, with police issuing 387 fines for road traffic violations. Notably, 129 of these fines were specifically for speeding.
As part of their traffic safety measures, police impounded 13 vehicles during the operations. They also conducted 113 breathalyser tests, resulting in 15 drivers being reported for drink-driving. Additionally, two preliminary drug tests were carried out, both of which returned positive results.
The police emphasized that these nationwide operations are not a one-time effort. They plan to continue these initiatives daily, maintaining an increased presence in urban areas, conducting targeted checks, and ensuring rapid responses to incidents. The overarching goal is to prevent crime, protect the public, and uphold public order across Cyprus.
The community response to these operations has been largely positive, with many residents expressing support for increased police presence and proactive measures aimed at enhancing safety. As the police continue their efforts, they remain committed to adapting their strategies based on the evolving needs of the community and the challenges posed by criminal activity.
In summary, the recent overnight operations reflect a determined approach by law enforcement to tackle crime head-on, ensuring that public safety remains a top priority for the people of Cyprus.
