**Police Arrest 18-Year-Old Over Counterfeit €50 Notes Found in Famagusta Hotel Room**
Famagusta, Cyprus – An 18-year-old male was arrested on Monday in the Famagusta district after police discovered counterfeit €50 notes in his possession and later in his hotel room. The arrest was made by the Famagusta Crime Combating Unit, following a tip-off that led to the investigation.
The incident began when officers received intelligence regarding counterfeit currency circulating in the area. Acting on this information, they visited a local business where an employee handed over two €50 notes that bore the same serial number. This discovery prompted further investigation into the source of the counterfeit notes.
Subsequent inquiries led the police to the 18-year-old, who was located and subjected to a body search. During this search, officers found two additional €50 notes in his possession, which also matched the serial number of the initial notes provided by the business employee. The counterfeit notes were seized as evidence, and the young man was arrested for committing a flagrant offence.
Following the arrest, police conducted a search of the hotel room where the suspect was staying. This search yielded an additional 19 counterfeit €50 notes, all of which bore the same serial number as the previously found notes. The total number of counterfeit notes seized amounted to 23.
The arrested individual is scheduled to appear before the Famagusta District Court today, where a remand order is expected to be sought. Meanwhile, the Famagusta Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is continuing its investigation into the matter to ascertain the origins of the counterfeit currency and any potential accomplices involved.
