According to police, members of Ledra police station signalled the driver to stop for a check at around 5 p.m. The 42-year-old instead accelerated and tried to flee. Officers gave chase, and the suspect eventually abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot before being stopped shortly afterwards. A check found the car had been reported stolen on August 27 in the Famagusta district, and that its registration plates belonged to another vehicle, which had also been reported stolen. A search of the car turned up a small quantity of cannabis, which was seized. The 42-year-old was arrested for offences committed in the act and remains in custody to facilitate investigations. Omorfita police station, the Nicosia district branch of YKAN (Anti-Drugs Unit), and Famagusta CID are continuing the investigation.
