**Police Dismantle Major Opiate Trafficking Ring in Cyprus**
The police anti-drug squad, known as Ykan, announced on Saturday the successful dismantling of a significant drug trafficking operation that was active across Cyprus. The operation focused on the importation and distribution of opiates, leading to a substantial seizure of illegal substances and multiple arrests.
During the extensive investigation, authorities confiscated approximately 60 kilograms of opiates. The operation resulted in the investigation of 17 related cases, with 21 individuals arrested in connection to the drug ring. Additionally, two other suspects remain at large, as police continue their search for these individuals.
According to police reports, 16 of the 17 cases have already been registered in court and are set to be addressed by the criminal court for trial. The defendants are currently being held in custody as pre-trial detainees while legal proceedings unfold.
In a further development, testimony obtained during the investigation implicated three of the arrested individuals in the importation of additional quantities of poppy seeds into Cyprus over the past three months. These new allegations could lead to further charges against the defendants.
As part of their ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking, Ykan has taken proactive measures to address the channels through which these opiates were imported. The police reached out to a foreign company that was responsible for sending the packages containing the seized drugs to Cyprus. Following this communication, the company has implemented recommendations and measures to prevent the future shipment of such products to the island.
The recent operation highlights the police's commitment to tackling drug-related crimes and underscores the challenges posed by organized trafficking networks. The seizures made during this bust varied in size, with police reporting recent confiscations ranging from 2 to 30 kilograms of opiates.
Authorities continue to stress the importance of public awareness and cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking, as they work to dismantle such operations and protect the community from the dangers associated with illegal drug use and distribution.
