The three-car crash happened around 8am. The 44-year-old special constable, who was off duty, was driving under circumstances still under investigation by police when his car struck a vehicle ahead of him, driven by a 43-year-old woman. The impact pushed her car forward into a third vehicle, driven by a 38-year-old man. The collision caused a fire in the cars driven by the 44-year-old and the 43-year-old, completely destroying both vehicles, while the 38-year-old’s car sustained damage to its rear. Police carried out alcotest checks on all three drivers. The 44-year-old special constable tested positive, with a final reading of 59 micrograms, against the legal limit of 22 micrograms set by law. A further check found that he had been driving without a valid insurance certificate. A criminal and disciplinary case is being pursued against the 44-year-old.
