The motorcyclist, Georgios Georgiou, a father of two who worked for the Larnaca District Self-Government Organisation (DLGO), was riding on the Kellia–Troulloi road at around 7:30pm when the crash happened. Georgiou, who had reportedly borrowed the motorcycle from his best man, was heading into a bend when he crossed, under circumstances still being investigated, into the opposite lane. His motorcycle collided head-on with a saloon car driven by a 28-year-old woman. The woman’s 32-year-old passenger and her two children, aged four and two, were also in the car. Georgiou, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown onto the road and died instantly. All four car occupants were taken to Larnaca General Hospital, given first aid and discharged. The driver’s breathalyser and drugs tests both came back negative. An autopsy found Georgiou died of a severe head injury, coroner Nikolas Charalambous said. He was also the father of a seven-year-old boy and a baby girl. He had worked for the DLGO since 2021, having started as an hourly-paid worker for the former Larnaca Water Supply Council before joining its staff. DLGO president Angelos Hadjicharalambous described him as a valued and much-loved colleague and family man, known for his character, work ethic and dedication. “His loss fills us with deep sorrow. At this difficult time, our thoughts are above all with his wife, his two children and his entire family. Safe travels, George,” Hadjicharalambous said. The organisation’s board met and agreed to financially support the family and cover funeral costs. More than half of this year’s road deaths have involved motorcyclists, with 14 of the dead riding two-wheelers, according to police data. Despite official targets, the number of fatal crashes remains high, with 27 deaths recorded over the same period last year. Police spokesperson Vyronas Vyronos, speaking to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), appealed to drivers to follow the traffic code. “We appeal to the public to observe the Traffic Code, comply with the rules and laws, and respect other road users,” he said, urging drivers to remember that “someone is waiting for them at home.” Vyronos said police maintain a strong presence on the road network, running campaigns and targeted policing in high-risk areas. He said police operations are guided by the force’s own assessments of the causes of fatal crashes, as well as the European traffic policing network Roadpol’s programme. This week, he noted, a campaign is under way against mobile phone use while driving, which he described as one of the high-risk factors behind fatal road accidents. “There are no magic solutions,” Vyronos said, noting that police cannot be present on every road or anticipate everything that might happen across Cyprus. “If each of us, when we take the wheel of a car, a motorcycle, a moped or even an electric scooter, fails to realise that our life is at risk at any moment, not only from our own actions but also from others using the road network, then the problem of fatal road accidents cannot largely be solved,” he said.
