**Police Investigate TikTok Opium Distribution Network Following Major Seizures**
Cyprus authorities are investigating a suspected drug distribution network that allegedly utilized social media platform TikTok to sell opiate-based substances. This follows a series of significant seizures totaling over 20 kilograms of dried poppy pods in the past ten days, culminating in the arrest of a 35-year-old man.
The investigation, led by the drug squad known as Ykan, began after police received credible information regarding the circulation of large quantities of dried poppy pods in the local market. These pods, derived from the opium poppy plant, contain alkaloids that can be processed into opiate substances, including morphine and heroin.
In the latest operation, police conducted a search at a residence in Nicosia on Sunday, where they uncovered 54 sealed packages containing dried poppy pods, weighing approximately 10 kilograms in total. Additionally, officers found two nylon bags with an extra 100 grams of dried pods and 15 grams of a beige powder, which is currently under examination.
The arrested individual, who has been residing in Cyprus illegally since April 2022, has been remanded in custody for eight days to facilitate ongoing investigations. His arrest follows the detention of five other suspects in two separate cases, which involved the seizure of around 12 kilograms of similar dried poppy pods.
According to police sources, the alleged distribution network appears to have been primarily targeting members of the Indian community in Cyprus. Authorities have not yet disclosed whether the substances were imported into the country or sourced from local suppliers.
As the investigation continues, Ykan is working to dismantle the broader network believed to be operating through social media channels. The use of platforms like TikTok for illicit drug distribution raises concerns about the evolving methods employed by drug traffickers to reach potential buyers.
The police's proactive approach in this case underscores their commitment to combating drug-related crimes in Cyprus, particularly as the country faces challenges related to substance abuse and trafficking. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses and more information becomes available.
