**Police Review to Examine Bodyguard Protection for Politicians**
A significant review of police protection arrangements for political and state officials is currently underway, following an announcement by Justice Minister Constantinos Fitiris. On Monday, Fitiris instructed the police security committee to reassess existing risk evaluations related to the security of politicians, a move that reflects growing concerns about the adequacy of current protection measures.
The comprehensive review is set to include newly elected parliamentary leaders Odysseas Michaelides of the Alma party and Fidias Panayiotou of the Direct Democracy party. Minister Fitiris confirmed that the police security committee, based at police headquarters, has been tasked with re-evaluating the protection provided to all political and state officials currently receiving police escorts. Panayiotou's case is expected to receive special consideration due to his role as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) and the significant amount of time he spends outside Cyprus, which may increase his exposure to potential security risks.
In addition to the new party leaders, the review will also assess existing protection arrangements for other political figures, including Elam leader Christos Christou. Adjustments to Christou's security detail may be made based on the updated risk assessments provided by the police security committee.
