**Title: Police Seize Two Kilos of Cannabis in Zygi, Arrest 63-Year-Old**
In a significant drug enforcement operation, police anti-drug officers in Cyprus seized approximately two kilograms of cannabis and arrested a 63-year-old man in the Zygi area. The operation, conducted by the drug squad known as Ykan, took place on Wednesday afternoon and involved multiple searches that uncovered a substantial amount of illegal substances and ammunition.
According to a statement from the police, the operation commenced when officers stopped a vehicle driven by the 63-year-old on the Zygi-Mari road. During the search of the vehicle, officers discovered around 500 grams of cannabis, which led to the immediate arrest of the suspect for a flagrant drug offense.
Following the initial arrest, police conducted a more extensive search of agricultural land and premises associated with the suspect in Zygi. This search yielded three nylon packages containing a total of approximately 1.5 kilograms of cannabis, which had been cleverly concealed inside a metal dog cage. The discovery of these additional drugs significantly escalated the case against the suspect.
In addition to the cannabis, police also seized a substantial quantity of ammunition, specifically 339 shotgun cartridges, which were found during a search of the suspect's residence. The presence of ammunition raises further concerns regarding the suspect's activities and potential threats to public safety.
Officers also confiscated two mobile phones from the suspect, which will undergo forensic examination to gather more evidence related to the case. Furthermore, €743 in cash was seized, and police are investigating whether this money is connected to illegal activities.
The Larnaca branch of the drug squad is continuing its investigation into the matter, working to uncover any additional information regarding the suspect's operations and potential accomplices. The police have not released the name of the arrested individual, as investigations are ongoing.
This operation highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement in Cyprus to combat drug-related crimes and ensure community safety. The seizure of such a significant quantity of cannabis and the arrest of the suspect may contribute to a broader crackdown on drug trafficking in the region.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are expected to provide further updates on the case and any developments that may arise from the forensic examinations of the seized items. The police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to drug use and trafficking in their communities.
