**Police Warn Public About Scammers Impersonating Tax Department**
Nicosia, Cyprus – The Cyprus Police issued a warning on Thursday regarding a recent incident involving phishing emails that attempt to deceive individuals by impersonating the tax department. This advisory comes after a complaint was lodged by a member of the public who encountered a fraudulent email claiming to be from the tax authorities.
The email in question informed the recipient that they had been approved for a tax refund, even specifying a purported amount. It included a link directing the recipient to a fake website that closely mimicked the official tax department's site. The email urged the individual to click on the link to complete the refund process, which required them to provide sensitive personal information.
Recognizing the email as a scam, the recipient refrained from taking any action and promptly reported the incident to the police. The Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is currently investigating the matter.
In light of this incident, police reiterated their advice to the public to remain vigilant when receiving unsolicited emails, especially those that request personal or financial information. They emphasized that legitimate tax or government departments will never ask for sensitive data such as passwords or banking details via email.
Authorities recommend that anyone who receives a suspicious email should delete it immediately and refrain from clicking on any links or providing personal information. If there is uncertainty about the authenticity of an email, individuals are encouraged to contact the relevant department directly to verify its legitimacy before taking any action.
To further protect against such scams, police suggest utilizing two-step verification for online accounts and being cautious when sharing information online. If someone inadvertently provides banking information to fraudsters, they should contact their bank without delay and report the incident to the police.
Phishing emails, which are designed to deceive recipients into revealing personal or financial information by masquerading as a trusted source, have become increasingly common. The police's warning serves as a timely reminder for the public to exercise caution in their digital communications, particularly as scams continue to evolve.
The police encourage everyone to stay informed about the tactics used by scammers and to take proactive steps to safeguard their personal information.
