**Port Shield 2026: Counter-terrorism Exercise Tests Emergency Response at Limassol Port**
On Wednesday, Limassol port’s container terminal became the site of a significant counter-terrorism exercise named “Port Shield 2026.” This large-scale drill, described by organizers as the first of its kind at the facility, utilized real operational resources to simulate a security incident and assess the readiness of various emergency response teams.
The exercise was conducted at the Eurogate Container Terminal Limassol (ECTL) and was a collaborative effort involving the terminal operator, Cyprus police, and the Cyprus Ports Authority. The primary objectives were to evaluate the effectiveness of current security measures, test operational coordination procedures, and enhance cooperation between public and private sector agencies in the face of potential terrorist threats impacting ships and port facilities.
Participants included executives and staff from Eurogate CTL, personnel from the Cyprus police, the ambulance service, the deputy ministry of shipping, the Cyprus Ports Authority, and DP World Limassol. The realistic operational conditions of the exercise allowed for a comprehensive assessment of the preparedness and response capabilities of the involved services.
Alexandros Demetriades, the chief operating officer of Eurogate CTL, expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of the exercise. He stated that it provided a valuable opportunity to evaluate security measures and operational coordination under conditions that closely mimic real-life scenarios. “We are pleased with the successful outcome of the exercise,” Demetriades remarked, emphasizing the importance of analyzing the lessons learned to enhance response times and coordination among the various services involved.
Demetriades highlighted that this exercise marked the first large-scale operation of its nature at the Limassol port, involving a significant number of participants and actual operational resources. He reiterated the importance of terminal security, noting that Eurogate CTL handles a substantial portion of Cyprus’ trade daily. As such, maintaining robust security measures is a top priority for the terminal.
Looking ahead, Demetriades assured that Eurogate CTL would continue to strengthen its risk prevention practices and security measures in collaboration with relevant authorities. The goal is to ensure that the terminal remains one of the safest container facilities in the eastern Mediterranean.
