A devastating earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck Indonesia early Saturday morning, leading to the deaths of at least 20 individuals. The quake's epicenter was located to the north of Flores Island, situated in the eastern region of the country, causing widespread panic as residents rushed into the streets amidst collapsing structures.
The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) initially issued a tsunami warning following the earthquake, which has since been lifted. Nelly Florida Riama, a deputy director for geophysics at BMKG, confirmed that no significant sea level rises were detected that could pose a threat to coastal communities. However, she cautioned that aftershocks were still occurring, urging the public to remain vigilant and to rely on official information from BMKG.

Fathur Rahman, a rescue official, reported that six individuals sustained injuries, and two people remain unaccounted for, believed to be buried beneath debris in the Nagekeo Regency, which was the area most severely affected by the quake.
The National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BNPB) noted that approximately 2,000 residents in Nagekeo Regency chose to self-evacuate following the earthquake and the subsequent tsunami warning. Tremors were felt widely across several regencies, including Sikka and West Manggarai in East Nusa Tenggara, as well as Bima City and Bima Regency in West Nusa Tenggara. Reports also indicated that tremors were experienced in Jeneponto, Selayar Islands, and Maros Regencies in South Sulawesi.
As rescue operations continue, authorities are working to assess the full extent of the damage and provide assistance to those affected. The Indonesian government has mobilized resources to aid in recovery efforts, emphasizing the need for calm among the populace and urging them to stay informed through official channels.
