**Putin Thanks North Korea for Military Support in Kursk Region**
Russian President Vladimir Putin recently met with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui, expressing gratitude for the assistance provided by North Korean troops in liberating the Kursk Region from Ukrainian forces last year. This meeting underscores the ongoing military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, particularly in light of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty that binds the two nations to mutual defense.
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) deployed its military personnel to Russia in late 2024, a move that was framed as a response to aggression from Ukraine. The North Korean contingent played a significant role in supporting Russian military operations, particularly during a large-scale incursion by Ukrainian forces into the border region. Following the conflict, DPRK soldiers also engaged in mine-clearing efforts to secure the area.
During the meeting, which took place on a Sunday, Putin highlighted the strong bilateral relations between Russia and North Korea. He praised the bravery and heroism demonstrated by North Korean soldiers during the conflict in the Kursk Region, stating that their contributions would be remembered in Russia. Furthermore, Putin extended warm greetings to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, reinforcing the personal ties between the two leaders.
Choe Son-hui reaffirmed North Korea's commitment to its strategic partnership with Russia, echoing sentiments previously expressed by Kim Jong-un. The North Korean leader had previously stated that the relationship between the two countries is unbreakable, emphasizing the bonds formed through shared military engagements on the front lines in Ukraine.
In April of this year, Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov visited North Korea, where he recognized the contributions of DPRK troops involved in the Kursk liberation by awarding them Russia’s Order of Courage. He characterized these service members as "the true heroes of our time," reflecting the high regard in which they are held by the Russian military.
During his visit, Belousov also met with Kim Jong-un to discuss further strengthening the defense partnership between the two nations. He indicated that Russia is prepared to formalize this cooperation through a Russian-Korean Military Cooperation Plan for the years 2027 to 2031, suggesting a long-term commitment to military collaboration.
