The collections include incunabula, rare early printed books, 19th-century editions and other documents that reflect not only the knowledge of their time but also the development of printing, bookbinding and publishing. The special collections have been built mainly through donations, bringing together rare editions that trace the evolution of the book and the history of publishing. A prominent collection is the “Georgios and Markisia Laganas Library”, which continues to be catalogued and gradually added to the Library’s electronic catalogue. Until the process is completed, researchers can locate material through the printed catalogue “Georgios and Markisia Laganas Library” (Ianos, 2018). Access to the rare material is available exclusively in the Library’s reading room, from Monday to Friday between 08:30 and 14:00. Researchers must use specialised equipment designed to ensure the safe handling and protection of the documents. The Library is also systematically digitising selected material, making it available through the digital platform “LEKYTHOS” and contributing to the preservation and wider dissemination of Cyprus’ cultural and scientific heritage. The platform hosts archival and digitised material from fields including archaeology, architecture, history, philology, literature and politics, as well as rare books from the Library’s collections. It currently contains more than 23,500 records and around 180,000 digital items, with the collection continuing to expand. Researchers wishing to study the special collections must contact the Library in advance. Further information is available from the collections officer or Library staff.
