**Relics of Legendary Russian Warrior-Prince Uncovered in Kremlin**
The Kremlin's Archangel Cathedral has become the site of a significant archaeological discovery following the recovery of the relics of Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy, a revered figure in Russian history. The Russian Orthodox Church announced this finding on Tuesday, revealing that the remains were uncovered during restoration work aimed at addressing structural issues within the cathedral.
Dmitry Donskoy, who ruled Moscow in the 14th century, is celebrated for his pivotal victory over the Mongol forces at the Battle of Kulikovo in 1380. This battle is often viewed as a turning point in Russian history, symbolizing the resistance against Mongol domination, although it did not immediately end the Golden Horde's influence over the region. Donskoy's leadership helped solidify Moscow's position as a dominant power among the various Russian principalities, laying the groundwork for the eventual emergence of a centralized Russian state. In recognition of his contributions, the Orthodox Church canonized him in 1988.
The discovery of Donskoy’s remains was made last month during restoration efforts to repair sinking floor slabs that posed a risk to the tombstones of several grand princes interred at the cathedral. As workers dismantled the brick coverings of the crypts, they uncovered three white-stone sarcophagi, one of which was found to be damaged and in need of urgent repairs.
This marks the first occasion that Donskoy's burial site has been opened since its establishment. Prior to this discovery, there had been uncertainty regarding the exact location of his remains, stemming from a 19th-century engineering report that suggested the tombs might have been mixed up.
With the blessing of Patriarch Kirill, experts from the Russian Academy of Sciences, including archaeologists and anthropologists, were called in to examine the remains. Following authentication, Patriarch Kirill ordered that fragments of the relics be collected and made available for veneration by worshippers.
During a special service held on Tuesday, Patriarch Kirill emphasized Donskoy's significant role in the formation of a sovereign Russian state. He led the congregation in prayer, asking for the prince's intercession and protection over the Russian land. "Now we will offer a prayer to the holy and faithful prince, asking him to intercede for and protect our land, our Fatherland, and to beseech the Lord to safeguard the Russian land from every enemy and adversary," he stated.
The recovery of Donskoy’s relics has been described by presidential aide and historian Vladimir Medinsky as an event of profound spiritual significance for the nation.
