**Replica of Ancient Aphrodite Bust Unveiled in Paralimni-Dherynia**
A scientifically accurate replica of the monumental head of the Aphrodite of Lefkolla has been unveiled at the town hall of Paralimni-Dherynia. This significant installation is housed in a specially constructed museum showcase, designed to honor the historical and cultural relevance of the original artifact.
The exhibition display case and pedestal were expertly crafted by Manolis Kamasas, a specialist in museum and exhibition design. Mayor George Nicolettos expressed his gratitude for Kamasas’ meticulous work, emphasizing the importance of properly presenting what he referred to as one of the most significant artifacts documenting the ancient history of the region.
The Aphrodite of Lefkolla is recognized as the most significant archaeological discovery in the vicinity of present-day Protaras Paralimni, linked to the ancient site of Lefkolla. Discovered in the 19th century, this monumental bust is considered one of the finest examples of Cypriot sculpture from the 4th century BC, showcasing characteristics typical of the late Classical Greek style.
Carved from local limestone, the original statue was part of a larger sculptural ensemble believed to have adorned an ancient sanctuary. A notable feature of the statue is its imposing crown, which symbolizes the goddess Aphrodite as the protector of the city and its prosperity. This highlights the vital role the cult of Aphrodite played in the life of ancient Lefkolla.
Currently, the original Aphrodite of Lefkolla is on display at the Neues Museum in Berlin, Germany. The creation of the replica was made possible through collaboration with the Department of Archaeology at Humboldt University Berlin, following a request from the Paralimni-Dherynia municipality. This initiative marks a symbolic return of the Aphrodite of Lefkolla to its place of origin, allowing residents and visitors to reconnect with their rich heritage.
The unveiling of the replica is expected to attract both local and international interest, serving as a reminder of the region's ancient history and cultural significance.
