**Rohingya Crisis: Aid Falls and Hope Fades**
As the Rohingya crisis enters its ninth year, the situation for over one million refugees in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar remains dire. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has issued a stark warning regarding the declining humanitarian aid that is essential for the survival of these stateless individuals. Ivo Freisen, the UNHCR representative in Bangladesh, highlighted the growing despair among the Rohingya, emphasizing that dwindling support is diminishing hope.
Since the mass exodus from Myanmar in 2017, the Rohingya have sought refuge in overcrowded camps in Cox’s Bazar, which currently hosts one of the largest refugee populations in the world. The camps, initially established to provide temporary shelter, have become long-term residences for many families. However, as the number of refugees continues to rise and funding for humanitarian efforts declines, the living conditions in these camps are deteriorating rapidly.
Freisen reported that approximately 95 percent of the Rohingya population relies heavily on humanitarian assistance for their daily needs. This dependence on external support has made the community particularly vulnerable, as cuts in aid threaten their already fragile existence. The situation is exacerbated by limited access to education and employment opportunities, which has led some young Rohingya to consider perilous sea journeys in search of a better life elsewhere.
The UNHCR has called for a comprehensive approach to address the ongoing crisis, emphasizing the need for a sustainable solution that allows for the safe and voluntary return of the Rohingya to Myanmar. Freisen pointed out that any return must be predicated on the establishment of conditions that ensure safety, citizenship, and freedom of movement for the Rohingya people. Discrimination and systemic barriers within Myanmar continue to pose significant challenges to the repatriation process.
As humanitarian funding continues to decline, the international community faces increasing pressure to respond to the needs of the Rohingya refugees. The situation calls for renewed commitment and support to prevent further deterioration of living conditions in the camps and to foster hope for a brighter future for the Rohingya people.
