**Romania Shuts Down Its Only Nuclear Power Plant Amid Record-Low Danube River Levels**
Romania's only nuclear power plant, located in Cernavoda, has been completely shut down due to unprecedented low water levels in the Danube River, as announced by state-owned energy company Nuclearelectrica on Thursday. The decision comes in response to a severe heatwave and drought affecting much of Europe, which has significantly impacted river levels critical for cooling nuclear facilities.

The shutdown of the Cernavoda plant has raised concerns in neighboring Moldova, which relies heavily on Romanian electricity to meet its energy needs, covering up to 60% of its electricity shortfall. The energy strain is not limited to Romania and Moldova; other countries in the region are also feeling the effects. Hungary's Paks nuclear power plant has had to significantly reduce its output due to the low water levels of the Danube. Similarly, France has faced challenges, with the state-run energy group EDF announcing reductions in nuclear generation due to high river temperatures and low water levels. This week, the Gravelines nuclear plant was forced to shut down three reactors after a massive influx of jellyfish disrupted operations.
The drought has also adversely affected hydropower generation in Italy, while Norway is experiencing its lowest reservoir levels in three decades. Analysts warn that the ongoing reactor outages and cuts in power generation could lead to increased electricity import dependence among the European Union's most vulnerable countries, potentially driving up power prices across the bloc. This disruption comes at a time when the EU is already grappling with an energy crisis exacerbated by the loss of affordable Russian gas due to sanctions related to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
