**Russia and Ethiopia Strengthen Strategic Partnership Through High-Level Talks**
In a significant diplomatic engagement, Russia and Ethiopia have reaffirmed the strategic nature of their partnership following high-level discussions in Addis Ababa. The talks, which took place on Tuesday, involved Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, and Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos. The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that the meetings served to reinforce the long-standing friendship between the two nations.
During the discussions, Prime Minister Abiy expressed his pleasure in hosting Lavrov and his delegation, highlighting that their conversations revolved around enhancing bilateral relations and exploring new avenues for collaboration. Abiy shared his sentiments on social media platform X, emphasizing the importance of the dialogue in fostering cooperation between Russia and Ethiopia.
The talks covered a wide range of topics aimed at expanding cooperation. Both sides agreed to promote direct business contacts and support joint projects across various sectors, including energy, transport infrastructure, digital technologies, telecommunications, information security, and agricultural production. Additionally, the discussions included preparations for the upcoming third Russia-Africa Summit, which is set to take place in Russia in October. Earlier in his visit, Lavrov also engaged in consultations with Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission. His last visit to Ethiopia occurred in July 2022, indicating a consistent engagement with the region.
The diplomatic relationship between Russia and Ethiopia dates back to 1943, and over the years, both countries have steadily expanded their cooperation. In a phone conversation earlier this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Abiy reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties. They agreed to enhance contacts at various levels, which has resulted in a notable increase in bilateral trade. Reports indicate that trade between the two nations nearly tripled in 2025, surpassing $435 million. This growth has been attributed to rising Russian exports of fertilizers and machinery, alongside increased Ethiopian coffee shipments to Russia.
As both nations look to the future, the reaffirmation of their strategic partnership highlights the importance of international relations in a rapidly changing global landscape.
