**Russia and North Korea Open First Cross-Border Road Bridge**
In a significant development for regional connectivity, Russia and North Korea have inaugurated their first road bridge across the Tumen River, which serves as the border between the two countries. The announcement was made by Oleg Kozhemyako, the Governor of Russia's Primorye region. This new infrastructure is anticipated to enhance mutual trade and provide a reliable year-round transport route.
The construction of the bridge commenced in April 2025, following an agreement signed between Moscow and Pyongyang in 2024. Prior to this, the only direct land transport link between the neighboring nations was the Friendship railway bridge that also spans the Tumen River.
The official launch of traffic across the bridge was conducted via video link by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song. Kozhemyako highlighted the importance of the new route in ensuring stable supplies of various products and fostering trade and economic cooperation between Russia and North Korea.
The bridge and its associated access roads extend approximately 4.7 kilometers, with the bridge itself measuring about 1 kilometer in length. It features two lanes of traffic, with the Russian section spanning 424 meters and the North Korean section measuring 581 meters.
A notable moment during the inaugural crossing was the participation of a restored red ZAZ-968M Zaporozhets, a vehicle with historical significance. This car, once owned by Soviet officer Yakov Novichenko, was driven across the bridge by his grandson, Nikolay Shcherbitsky. Novichenko is remembered for his bravery during a 1946 mass rally in Pyongyang, where he shielded North Korean leader Kim Il Sung from a grenade attack, sustaining severe injuries in the process.
In addition to the bridge, a new Khasan road checkpoint has been established adjacent to the crossing. This checkpoint is equipped with ten traffic lanes and is expected to process up to 300 vehicles and 2,850 individuals daily when it reaches full operational capacity, as reported by the Russian Transport Ministry. Officials believe that this new road link will significantly reduce transport costs and stimulate bilateral trade between the two countries.
The opening of this bridge marks a new chapter in the relationship between Russia and North Korea, potentially paving the way for increased economic collaboration and connectivity in the region.
