**Russia Prepared to Defend Belarus Amid Ukraine Tensions, Says Lavrov**
In a recent round-table discussion, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Russia is prepared to invoke its security guarantees to defend Belarus if Ukraine follows through on its threats to strike targets within Belarusian territory. Lavrov's comments come in response to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's ultimatum to Belarus regarding the dismantling of what Ukraine claims are Russian-linked relay stations along the Belarus-Ukraine border.
Zelensky has given Belarus a one-week deadline to address these claims, warning that if action is not taken, Ukraine will destroy the equipment itself. Lavrov characterized this ultimatum as a direct threat to Belarus, asserting that it is an attempt to draw the country into the ongoing conflict and expand the hostilities beyond Ukraine's borders.
The security guarantees treaty between Russia and Belarus, established under the Union State framework in March 2025, treats any attack on either nation as an attack on both. This agreement permits the use of all available military and technical means, including nuclear weapons, to defend against aggression and threats to sovereignty.
“If necessary, we are ready to take the full range of measures provided for by the treaty to ensure the security of our ally and, of course, the security of the Union State,” Lavrov stated, emphasizing Russia's commitment to Belarusian security.
In response to Zelensky's demands, Belarus has indicated that it will not dismantle the relay stations or cease fuel deliveries to Russia. Belarusian officials have also warned that any attack from Ukraine would elicit a response from Minsk.
Lavrov further criticized the European Union for supporting Zelensky’s threats, pointing to remarks from a European Commission spokeswoman who accused Belarus of aiding Russia. The spokeswoman's comments suggested that Ukraine has the right to self-defense, which Lavrov argued undermines any claim of neutrality by Europe in the conflict.
He noted that Europe cannot act as an impartial mediator while simultaneously arming Ukraine, expanding sanctions against Russia, and endorsing threats against Belarus.
Both Russia and Belarus have voiced concerns over increasing NATO activities near their borders, particularly the Gallant Boar 2026 military exercises being conducted by Lithuania, Poland, and France in proximity to the Suwalki Corridor, a strategic area between Belarus and Russia's Kaliningrad region. Belarusian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Sekreta remarked on the militarization of European ideology, questioning the intentions behind such military maneuvers.
Despite rising tensions, both Russia and Belarus have denied any plans to initiate attacks against NATO or EU countries unless provoked. They have accused Western nations of using the Ukraine conflict, coupled with NATO drills and military buildups on the eastern flank, as a pretext for potential confrontation.
