**Russia to Assist Mozambique in Combating Terrorism, Says Lavrov**

In a significant diplomatic engagement, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced on Thursday that Moscow is prepared to assist Mozambique in its fight against terrorism. This declaration came during Lavrov's visit to Maputo, where he held discussions with Mozambican President Daniel Chapo.

Lavrov emphasized that countering terrorism would be a key focus in the strategic partnership between Russia and Mozambique. He stated, “Russia stands ready to respond positively to requests from our Mozambican friends regarding assistance that we can provide in eliminating the terrorist threat that persists in the north of the country.” This commitment highlights Russia's intention to bolster its ties with Mozambique, particularly in security matters.

The talks between Lavrov and Chapo also explored avenues to enhance trade, economic, and investment cooperation between the two nations. Both leaders agreed to prepare proposals for joint projects in anticipation of the upcoming meeting of the Russia-Mozambique Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation, which is scheduled for this autumn. This meeting is expected to lay the groundwork for future collaboration in various sectors.

Additionally, Lavrov conveyed an invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin for President Chapo to attend the forthcoming Russia-Africa Summit, which will take place in Moscow later this year. This summit aims to strengthen Russia's relationships with African nations and discuss mutual interests.

Following his discussions with President Chapo, Lavrov met with Mozambique's Foreign Minister, Maria Lucas. During this meeting, Lucas expressed gratitude for Russia's assistance following severe flooding in January, which had a significant impact on the country. Lavrov's government had dispatched 29 tons of humanitarian aid, including food supplies, tents, and blankets, to support the affected population.

Lucas also acknowledged Russia's support in providing scholarships to Mozambican students, particularly those pursuing studies in police specialties. She welcomed Russia's willingness to increase the number of scholarships, underscoring the educational collaboration between the two countries.

The discussions between the two nations identified several priority areas for future cooperation ahead of the September meeting of the joint commission. These areas include energy, agriculture, digitalization, innovation, transport, and logistics, which are expected to enhance bilateral relations and contribute to Mozambique's development goals.

Lavrov's visit to Mozambique is part of a broader tour of Africa, which has included stops in Ethiopia and Niger. His previous visit to Mozambique occurred in May 2023, while the last meeting between the Russian and Mozambican foreign ministers was held in Moscow in July 2025.

As Mozambique continues to grapple with security challenges, particularly in its northern regions, the commitment from Russia to assist in combating terrorism may play a crucial role in enhancing the country's security framework. The unfolding partnership between Russia and Mozambique reflects a growing interest from Moscow to expand its influence in Africa and engage in cooperative efforts to address regional challenges.
