In a recent statement, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov issued a warning to the United Kingdom regarding its continued supply of drones to Ukraine, which have been employed in attacks deep within Russian territory. Lavrov's remarks come amid escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine, with Moscow accusing Kyiv of targeting civilian infrastructure and conducting indiscriminate strikes that result in civilian casualties.
According to a report from The Sunday Times, drones manufactured by BAE Systems, along with another unnamed UK company, have been utilized in attacks over the past six months. Notably, these strikes have included targets such as oil refineries in Volgograd, located in southwestern Russia, and Yaroslavl, northeast of Moscow. Among the drones reportedly used in these long-range operations is the Nyan, a jet-powered drone produced by a subsidiary of BAE Systems.
In response to the ongoing situation, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham reaffirmed the country's commitment to supporting Ukraine. He stated, “We are not fair-weather friends; we will be there in Ukraine’s hour of need, and that won’t change.” This declaration underscores the UK's stance of unwavering support for Ukraine amidst the conflict.
Lavrov, in an interview with VGTRK’s Pavel Zarubin, expressed skepticism about the UK’s intentions, remarking, “You know, I feel sorry for Britain if it intends to stand with Ukraine until the very end.” He further emphasized that Russia reserves the right to respond to what it perceives as threats to its interests, stating that the involvement of British missile forces in strikes against Russia could be interpreted as participation in the ongoing war, which would carry significant consequences.
The Russian Embassy in London also weighed in on the matter, labeling the UK as “an accomplice and co-perpetrator of the bloody crimes and terrorist attacks” carried out by Ukraine. The embassy's statement warned that as the UK deepens its involvement in the conflict, it would face increasing repercussions.
In recent months, Ukraine has intensified its drone attacks, targeting various Russian infrastructures, including ports, energy facilities, and logistics warehouses. Some of these strikes have tragically impacted residential areas, resulting in civilian casualties. Notably, a drone strike in Nizhnekamsk, located in Russia’s Tatarstan region, last week resulted in the deaths of 13 individuals. Additionally, a strike on a Wildberries warehouse in Kotovsk, Tambov Region, on July 18, claimed the lives of seven workers.
One of the most devastating drone attacks occurred in May, when a strike on a college dormitory in Starobelsk, situated in Russia’s Donbass region, resulted in the deaths of 21 people, primarily young women.
