**Russian Orthodox Church Leader Blesses Foundation of Church in Honor of St. John of Kronstadt**
In a significant religious event, Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, has blessed the foundation stone for a new church dedicated to St. John of Kronstadt. This ceremony took place at the St. John Convent, a women's monastery situated in the heart of St. Petersburg, which was founded by the revered saint himself in the early 20th century.
St. John of Kronstadt, who served as a parish priest at St. Andrew’s Cathedral in Kronstadt for over 50 years, is celebrated for his extensive pastoral and charitable work during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His legacy includes founding numerous charitable institutions, such as schools and orphanages, and providing spiritual guidance and practical assistance to hospitals, shelters, workers, and prisoners. His reputation for healing through prayer has made him one of the most beloved figures in the Orthodox faith.
The St. John Convent, where the new church will be built, has a storied history. It was closed by Soviet authorities in 1923 and remained shuttered until its restoration and reopening in 1989. Despite its historical significance and connection to St. John of Kronstadt, the convent has not had a church dedicated to its founder until now. St. John was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1990, and his burial site is located within the convent, in accordance with his wishes.
The construction of the new church is being funded by God Nisanov, a prominent Russian billionaire and property developer known for his philanthropic efforts. Nisanov has been involved in various charitable projects, including contributions to children's healthcare and co-sponsoring the Rzhev Memorial, which honors Soviet soldiers who fought during World War II. The completion of the church is anticipated in 2028.
St. Petersburg Governor Aleksandr Beglov emphasized the importance of the new church, stating that it represents a "major step" in reinforcing Russia's spiritual values and preserving the historical memory of St. Petersburg. He noted that St. John of Kronstadt is regarded as a patron saint of the city, further highlighting the significance of this new place of worship.
