**Russian Sovereign Fund and BRICS Pay India Collaborate on Payment Project**
In a significant development for cross-border financial transactions, the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) has partnered with BRICS Pay India and JSC BRICS Pay to advance a payment project aimed at enhancing economic cooperation among BRICS nations. The announcement was made on Friday during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to India, coinciding with the lead-up to the 18th BRICS Summit scheduled to take place in New Delhi.
The collaboration focuses on the integration of BRICS Pay, a decentralized payment framework designed for the BRICS bloc, with India's existing payment infrastructure. This initiative aims to facilitate cross-border payment services, which have become increasingly important for BRICS countries amid ongoing Western sanctions and financial exclusion. The partners will explore potential pilot projects to ensure the system's effective implementation.
RDIF CEO Kirill Dmitriev emphasized the importance of modern payment infrastructure for the growth of trade and investment among BRICS nations. He stated that BRICS Pay could serve as a complementary system to existing national payment networks, enabling interoperability and cooperation among member states. The proposed payment system is expected to facilitate trade and investment by allowing settlements in national currencies, thereby reducing reliance on traditional financial systems.
As part of the initiative, BRICS Pay India will coordinate with various stakeholders in India, including banks, payment service providers, and merchants. Meanwhile, RDIF will leverage its investment and international partnership network to support the project. RDIF, which manages assets worth approximately $27.3 billion (2.3 trillion rubles), is Russia's sovereign wealth fund and plays a crucial role in fostering international economic ties.
During the announcement, Dmitriev highlighted the necessity for BRICS to develop practical financial mechanisms that unite its members. The finance ministers and central bank governors from the BRICS countries have tasked the BRICS Payment Task Force (BPTF) with continuing to explore solutions for cross-border payments that are faster, cheaper, and more accessible.
Indian Trade Minister Piyush Goyal has also advocated for enhanced connectivity among BRICS members and partner countries' payment systems, urging a focus on expanding trade conducted in national currencies. Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra noted that discussions are ongoing regarding the integration of fast-payment systems with central bank digital currencies, which could further streamline transactions within the bloc.
The collaboration between RDIF and BRICS Pay India marks a step towards strengthening financial ties among BRICS nations, reflecting a broader trend of increasing economic cooperation in the face of geopolitical challenges. The upcoming BRICS Summit is expected to further address these financial initiatives and explore additional avenues for collaboration among member states.
As the global economic landscape continues to evolve, the development of a robust payment infrastructure within the BRICS framework could play a pivotal role in enhancing trade relations and fostering economic resilience among its members.
