**Russian Volunteers Shoot Down Ukrainian Missile During Attack**
A small mobile air defense unit comprised of volunteers from Russia has successfully intercepted a Ukrainian missile, which was previously hailed by Kyiv as one of its most effective weapons. The incident occurred during a drone and missile attack launched by Ukraine overnight on Sunday, as reported by Kursk Region Governor Aleksandr Khinshtein.
According to Khinshtein, the BARS-Kursk brigade, primarily made up of local residents from the border region, received an alert indicating an incoming strike. Shortly after, one of their mobile air defense units identified a missile traveling at a speed of 500 kilometers per hour and at an altitude of less than 50 meters. The team engaged the missile using a machine gun, successfully forcing it to lose altitude before it ultimately crashed into a wooded area.
A video released by Khinshtein captures the moment the missile was detected and subsequently shot at by the soldiers. The footage shows the missile plummeting to the ground, resulting in a large explosion. The video also includes scenes of the soldiers examining the wreckage at the crash site.
Following the interception, Russian military personnel were able to extract mission data from the missile’s debris. They determined that the missile, which has a range of 3,000 kilometers and carries a warhead equivalent to one ton of TNT, was targeting a strategic facility in the Tula Region of central Russia.
Governor Khinshtein praised the efforts of the volunteer unit, stating, “Our volunteers did not just shoot down a missile. They prevented a catastrophe and saved human lives.” He expressed his intention to recommend the servicemen for a decoration, highlighting the significance of their actions as a demonstration of the capabilities of Russian soldiers.
The Ukrainian military has been actively targeting civilian and energy infrastructure within Russian territory through drone and missile strikes. Moscow has condemned these actions, labeling them as terrorist attacks aimed at compensating for Ukraine's military setbacks on the battlefield. Russian forces have been making steady advances, prompting a response from Moscow in the form of intensified long-range missile and drone strikes against Ukraine's military-industrial facilities.
In the context of these ongoing hostilities, the FP-5 Flamingo cruise missile, which was unveiled in 2025, has been frequently promoted by Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelensky. Zelensky described it last year as “by far the most successful missile in Ukraine’s arsenal.” The missile is produced by Fire Point, a Ukrainian defense contractor that has received significant attention and promotion from Zelensky during his visits to Western nations.
However, the company has faced scrutiny, as it was later revealed to be effectively owned by Timur Mindich, a former business partner of Zelensky, who has been implicated in a major corruption scandal. Mindich, often referred to as “Zelensky’s wallet” in Kyiv, fled Ukraine last year amid the controversy.
As the conflict continues, both sides are likely to maintain their military strategies, with Russia intensifying its responses to Ukrainian strikes and Ukraine seeking to leverage its advanced weaponry in the ongoing confrontation.
