**SBA Police Conduct 22 Arrests in a Week Amidst Road Safety Operations**
Over the past week, the police operating within the Sovereign Base Areas (SBAs) of Cyprus have made 22 arrests for various offenses, including drug possession and drink-driving. This surge in law enforcement activity comes as part of a broader initiative to enhance road safety and public order across the region.
During the week, a total of 31 road safety operations were conducted, resulting in the issuance of 57 fixed penalty notices and 30 written cautions. These operations are part of ongoing efforts by the SBA police to ensure compliance with traffic laws and to promote safer driving practices among residents and visitors.
One notable incident occurred on the evening of September 1 in Dhekelia, where officers apprehended a man suspected of driving under the influence of drugs. A subsequent search of his vehicle revealed a small quantity of suspected crystal methamphetamine, two clasp knives, a glass pipe containing traces of drugs, and a grinder believed to have been used for cannabis. This arrest highlights the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in combating drug-related offenses within the SBAs.
In addition to drug-related arrests, police investigated seven road traffic collisions throughout the week. Among these incidents was a tragic fatal collision on the Limassol-Paphos motorway, where a man lost his life while attempting to retrieve an item that had fallen onto the road. The driver of the minibus involved in the incident was arrested and subsequently released on bail as investigations continue.
Temporary Superintendent Melina Papagregoriou commented on the week’s operations, expressing condolences for the victim of the fatal collision. She emphasized the importance of road safety, urging all road users to remain vigilant, reduce speed when approaching stationary vehicles, and exercise caution, particularly on high-speed roads. “This was a demanding week for our officers, tragically marked by a fatal collision on the Limassol-Paphos motorway. Our thoughts remain with the family and loved ones of the man who lost his life,” she stated.
The SBA police also reported significant activity from their marine unit, which conducted 39 patrols and checked 51 vessels. During these operations, officers successfully rescued six individuals off Lady’s Mile after their boat experienced engine failure, demonstrating the unit's commitment to maritime safety.
In a separate initiative, the dedicated anti-bird trapping team in Dhekelia continued its efforts to combat the illegal capture of migrating songbirds. Over the week, they conducted five targeted patrols, resulting in the removal and destruction of six iron poles and four iron bases used for trapping at a specific site.
These operations reflect the SBA police's ongoing commitment to maintaining public safety and addressing various offenses within their jurisdiction.
