**SBA Police Make 34 Arrests in a Week of Increased Activity**
The Sovereign Base Areas (SBA) police reported a significant week of law enforcement activity, resulting in a total of 34 arrests for various offences. Among these, eight individuals were apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, highlighting ongoing concerns about road safety in the region.
In addition to the DUI arrests, police are currently investigating four separate drug-related cases, three of which involve suspected cocaine. This uptick in drug investigations underscores the SBA police's commitment to tackling substance abuse and related crimes within their jurisdiction.
As part of their efforts to enhance road safety, officers conducted 30 road safety campaigns throughout the SBAs. These initiatives led to the issuance of 63 fixed penalties for traffic violations and the administration of 25 breath tests. The proactive approach aims to deter reckless driving and promote safer roads for all users.
In a separate incident over the weekend, SBA police collaborated with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre and Cyprus police in a search and rescue operation in the Dhekelia area. The operation successfully located two men, aged 25 and 37, approximately 1.5 nautical miles offshore. Fortunately, both individuals were unharmed, emphasizing the importance of coordinated efforts in emergency situations.
Temporary Superintendent Melina Papagregoriou issued a warning to beachgoers, urging them to stay vigilant regarding changing sea and weather conditions. This advisory comes in light of several recent drowning incidents in Cyprus, including the tragic death of a 72-year-old man in Dhekelia on August 17. The superintendent's message serves as a reminder for the public to exercise caution while enjoying water activities.
Additionally, police are investigating a suspected arson incident that occurred on Sunday morning. A vehicle was deliberately set on fire, and the flames subsequently spread to a second vehicle parked nearby. Investigators are currently looking into the motive and circumstances surrounding this act of vandalism.
Reflecting on the past week, Superintendent Papagregoriou described it as demanding, with officers responding to a variety of emergencies, including drug cases, dangerous driving incidents, and serious criminal investigations. She reassured the community that the police would maintain visible and proactive patrols while continuing to collaborate with local communities and partner agencies to ensure public safety.
The SBA police's recent activities highlight their ongoing commitment to law enforcement and community safety, as they navigate the challenges of maintaining order in a busy and dynamic environment.
