**Seven Cypriots Set to Compete at Balkan U20 Athletics Championships in Romania**
Seven young athletes from Cyprus are gearing up to represent their country at the Balkan Under 20 Athletics Championships, taking place in Craiova, Romania, this Saturday. The team, consisting of five male and two female competitors, will participate in a variety of events including sprints, hurdles, jumps, and throws.
The event is particularly significant for two of the athletes, Andreas Savva and Loukas Pero, who are aiming to meet the qualifying standards for the World Under 20 Championships. Savva will compete in the 110 metre hurdles, where he has a personal best time of 14.07 seconds. To qualify for the World Championships, he needs to improve his time to 14.05 seconds. Meanwhile, Pero will take part in the long jump, having achieved a best jump of 7.43 metres; he must reach 7.58 metres to secure his spot at the World event.
The Cypriot delegation will depart for Romania on Friday, led by Kyriakos Tsolakis, president of the GSO (Cyprus Sports Organization). Coaches Elli Evangelidou and Kyriakos Antoniou will also accompany the team to provide guidance and support during the competition.
In addition to Savva and Pero, the Cypriot squad features several other promising athletes. Lambros Christofides will compete in the 100 metres, while Charalambos Zenonos will also participate in the 110 metre hurdles. Emilios Alexandrou is set to compete in the discus throw, and the women's events will see Chisom Grace Iheaka and Isabella Sofia Mosetti in the 100 metre hurdles.
The competition is scheduled to commence in the early evening, starting with the hurdles events, followed by the 100 metres, long jump, and discus throw.
Cyprus has a strong track record at the Balkan Under 20 Championships, having won a total of 27 medals over the past five years, including 11 gold, 10 silver, and six bronze medals. This success has been a source of pride for the nation, especially considering that many current senior athletes, such as Olivia Fotopoulou, Natalia Christofi, Daphne Georgiou, and George Koniarakis, first gained recognition at these championships during their junior careers.
The Cyprus Amateur Athletics Association (Koeas) expresses optimism that this year's team will continue the tradition of excellence and further enhance Cyprus' reputation in regional athletics. The experience gained at the championships is expected to be invaluable for the young athletes, providing them with the opportunity to compete against some of the best emerging talents from across the Balkans.
As the athletes prepare for their events, the anticipation builds not only for the chance at medals but also for the opportunity to qualify for the World Under 20 Championships. The performance of Savva and Pero will be closely watched, as their aspirations add an extra layer of significance to their participation in Craiova.
With the championships just around the corner, the Cypriot athletes are poised to make their mark on the regional stage, showcasing their skills and determination in pursuit of athletic excellence.
