**Shakespeare is Back at Curium: A Summer Tradition Returns with Othello**
The ancient amphitheatre of Curium, a historic site known for its stunning views and rich cultural heritage, is set to host a cherished theatrical event this summer. The annual production of "Shakespeare at Curium," organized by Performing Arts for Cyprus Charities, will take place on July 9, 10, and 11, featuring one of Shakespeare's most renowned tragedies, "Othello."
Since its inception in 1962, "Shakespeare at Curium" has become a beloved tradition, drawing audiences from Cyprus and beyond. The event combines the timeless works of Shakespeare with the breathtaking backdrop of Curium’s ancient stones, creating a unique experience that celebrates both classic theatre and the island's historical significance.
This year marks a special occasion as "Othello" will be performed at Curium for only the third time in the event's history. The play, written around 1603, delves into themes of jealousy, manipulation, and prejudice, making it a poignant choice for contemporary audiences. The narrative follows Othello, a Moorish general in Venice, who faces a tragic downfall orchestrated by his envious ensign, Iago. As Iago's deceitful schemes unfold, Othello's insecurities are exploited, leading to devastating consequences for all involved.
"Othello" is celebrated not only for its compelling storyline but also for the psychological depth of its characters. Iago, often regarded as one of literature's most notorious villains, exemplifies the destructive nature of jealousy and betrayal. The performances will be directed by Linda Crawshaw, who aims to bring a fresh perspective to this classic work while maintaining its emotional intensity.
