**SpaceX Rocket Stage Crashes into Moon**
A discarded upper stage from a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is believed to have impacted the Moon on Wednesday, following a year-long journey through space. Scientists tracking the rocket's trajectory indicated that the four-ton stage was expected to collide with the lunar surface near the Einstein Crater at a speed of approximately 8,700 kilometers per hour (kph). The anticipated time of impact was around 06:35 GMT, although official confirmation of the event is still pending.
The Falcon 9 rocket, which launched in January 2025, was originally carrying the US Blue Ghost and Japanese Resilience lunar landers. While the first-stage booster successfully returned to Earth, the second stage remained in orbit after delivering the spacecraft toward the Moon. SpaceX had initially placed the upper stage on a trajectory deemed safe under existing regulations. However, a combination of solar activity and gravitational influences altered its path, leading to the eventual collision with the Moon.
Astronomers had hoped to witness a flash and a plume of lunar dust resulting from the impact, but reports of such sightings from Earth were not immediately confirmed. NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, along with South Korea’s Danuri probe, is expected to capture images of the impact site, although processing these images may take several days.
NASA spokesperson Jimi Russell reassured the public, stating, “There is no danger to Earth.” He noted that the agency would closely observe the crash site for scientific analysis. Researchers anticipate that the impact will yield valuable insights into the formation of craters and dust plumes, which could enhance methods for locating lunar impacts. Additionally, this event raises awareness about the potential hazards posed by artificial debris as more missions are planned for the lunar vicinity.
While the Moon is frequently bombarded by natural meteoroids, collisions involving human-made objects are relatively rare. NASA has previously conducted controlled impacts of rocket stages into the lunar surface during the Apollo missions to gather seismic data. As the prospect of establishing permanent bases, satellites, and other infrastructure on and around the Moon increases, experts have cautioned that unplanned impacts could pose a greater risk.
