**SpaceX to Build $100 Billion Starship Rocket Complex in Louisiana**
SpaceX has announced plans to construct a significant new rocket launch complex in southern Louisiana, marking a major expansion of its operations. The ambitious project, estimated to cost $100 billion, will transform a 125,000-acre site on Pecan Island into a pivotal base for the company’s satellite launch initiatives, particularly those involving artificial intelligence (AI).
The announcement was made on Tuesday by SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell during an event held near the proposed site in Vermilion Parish, attended by Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and other state officials. This new facility, named Starbase, Louisiana, will allow SpaceX to broaden its Starship launch operations beyond its existing locations in South Texas and Florida.
The complex is designed to support a high volume of launches, with Shotwell stating that it is expected to facilitate thousands of Starship flights annually. Construction is slated to commence next year, with the first launch anticipated to take place in 2029.
SpaceX's plans for the Louisiana site include the development of a "self-sustaining" spaceport. This facility will feature its own propellant production, power generation, deep-water shipping capabilities, and vehicle processing facilities. There are also indications that an airport may be included in the project, further enhancing the site’s operational capacity.
Governor Landry characterized the project as an "inflection point" for Louisiana, emphasizing its potential economic impact. "This project means more than just steel, technology, and capital. It represents jobs for our families. It represents momentum for our communities, and it represents protection for our coast," he stated. SpaceX has projected that the new site will create over 3,000 jobs in the region, contributing to local economic growth.
Despite the potential benefits, the announcement has not been without controversy. Some residents near SpaceX’s existing sites have expressed concerns regarding environmental issues, including water quality and pollution, as well as the pressure to sell their land to accommodate the company's expansion.
SpaceX has established a significant presence in the United States in recent years, having developed a Colossus AI data center in Tennessee and Mississippi, as well as Starlink facilities in Austin, Texas. The company is also planning to build a chip manufacturing plant in central Texas, further diversifying its operations.
The Louisiana project represents a strategic move for SpaceX as it seeks to enhance its capabilities in satellite launches and AI technology.
