**Spanish Firefighters Turn to the Offensive Against Deadly Almería Blaze**
Firefighters in Spain's southeastern Almería province are intensifying their efforts to combat one of the deadliest wildfires in the country’s recent history. The fire, which erupted on Friday, has claimed the lives of at least 12 individuals, prompting emergency services to take urgent action and evacuate more villages as a precautionary measure.
The wildfire, exacerbated by strong winds, rapidly spread through the region, engulfing victims as they attempted to escape. The bodies of the deceased were discovered near the forested area of Bédar, located north of Los Gallardos. Autopsies have been conducted on all 12 victims, although their identities have not yet been confirmed. Initial reports suggest that most of the deceased may be British and Belgian nationals, alongside one Spanish citizen.
Antonio Sanz, the head of emergencies in the Andalusia region, provided updates on the situation during a press conference at the emergency zone. He described the wildfire as “complex” and indicated that it continues to advance. Despite the challenging conditions, Sanz commended the efforts of the firefighters, who have managed to prevent the blaze from crossing a major highway that leads to more densely populated coastal towns. “So far we have been engaged in defence work, to prevent advances,” he stated. “Today is the first day we will be able to work on attacking the fire.”
As of late Friday, over 1,400 residents had been evacuated from the vicinity of the fire, with precautionary measures extending to several communities around Bédar. The firefighting operation involves more than 500 firefighters and emergency personnel, including regional firefighters, soldiers, and 19 specialists from a national firefighting brigade.
Emergency officials have reported that the fire has consumed approximately 6,600 hectares of land. Crews are currently focusing their efforts on the western flank of the blaze, where the fire remains most intense and is spreading rapidly. Sanz noted that the night had passed relatively well given the circumstances, with no new direct threats to inhabited areas reported.
Eyewitness accounts reveal the alarming speed at which the fire spread. Regional president reports indicate that at one point, the flames covered a distance of 15 kilometers in just two hours. Víctor Manuel Fernández, the parish priest of Bédar and Los Gallardos, recounted his experience of the unfolding disaster. He had been attending a Mass in a neighboring village when he first noticed the smoke. Initially, he believed the firefighters would manage to control the situation. However, upon exiting the church, he was confronted with a massive cloud of black smoke and flames rapidly consuming the landscape. “It was a matter of minutes,” he recalled.
As the firefighting efforts continue, authorities are working to identify the deceased. The Institute of Forensic Medicine in Almería has stated that samples from the victims have been sent to Madrid for further analysis and comparison with DNA provided by families. Although seven individuals have been formally reported missing by their families, emergency officials have indicated that the likelihood of a significant increase in the death toll is low.
The situation remains fluid as firefighters battle the blaze, and authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and adhere to evacuation orders where necessary. The community is coming together in the face of this tragedy, with many expressing their gratitude for the efforts of emergency services working tirelessly to contain the fire and protect lives.
