The Vikram-1 rocket, which stands approximately 22 meters (72 feet) tall, was designed to carry payloads of up to 350 kilograms into low-Earth orbit. The mission, dubbed "Mission Aagaman," successfully injected its payload into a 450-kilometer orbit after a flight duration of about 17 minutes. Skyroot Aerospace announced the success of the mission in a statement, emphasizing that this launch serves as a test flight aimed at validating the rocket's capabilities and collecting data for future commercial endeavors.
"This is a test flight. We will be doing a few of these before we move into routine commercial flights," the company noted. Founded in 2018, Skyroot Aerospace has made significant strides in the space sector, becoming the first Indian space startup to achieve a valuation of $1 billion earlier this year. The number of startups in the space domain has surged from a handful in 2019 to over 400 by early 2026. This initiative aims to encourage innovation in building rockets, satellites, and launch services, with the goal of increasing India's share in the global space economy from approximately $8 billion to an ambitious $44 billion by 2033.
Historically, India has relied on the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) for its space missions. ISRO has achieved notable milestones, including launching 104 satellites into orbit on a single rocket in 2017—a record at that time—and successfully landing the Chandrayaan-3 mission near the moon's south pole in 2023.
Skyroot's recent success is expected to attract increased private investment in the Indian space sector, as startups position themselves to compete with well-established global players, including SpaceX, which is backed by Elon Musk. According to the global market intelligence platform Tracxn, funding for Indian space startups has increased five-fold since 2020, reaching an estimated $152 million by 2025.
