**Title: Statos-Agios Fotios Fire Contained with Swift Response from Fire Services**
**Date: August 22, 2026**
A wildfire that erupted near the Statos-Agios Fotios community in the Paphos district has been successfully contained, thanks to the prompt actions of local firefighting teams. The fire, which was first detected by a Civil Defence patrol, threatened to spread into nearby residential areas but was controlled before it could cause significant damage.
The blaze consumed approximately three hectares of wild vegetation, including vineyards and acacia trees, and resulted in damage to irrigation hoses in the vicinity. Fire Service spokesman Andreas Kettis confirmed that the rapid response of the fire crews played a crucial role in preventing the fire from escalating.
The firefighting operation involved a comprehensive deployment of resources. Four crewed Fire Service vehicles and five vehicles from the Forestry Department were actively engaged in combating the flames. Additionally, the Civil Defence and the Game and Fauna Service each contributed one fire vehicle to the effort. Volunteer groups, including Atlas and Blue Heart, also participated in the firefighting activities.
In a significant aerial response, six aircraft were utilized throughout the operation. Two aircraft were already on patrol when the fire broke out, while an additional four helicopters and planes were summoned to assist in the firefighting efforts. Ground crews remained on site to ensure the fire was fully extinguished, with two firefighting helicopters continuing their operations.
To further support the firefighting efforts, a hired earth-moving vehicle and a water tanker were brought in to aid in controlling the blaze. As of now, two helicopters and all ground teams are still present at the scene, working diligently to eliminate any remaining hotspots and prevent a resurgence of the fire.
The successful containment of the Statos-Agios Fotios fire highlights the effectiveness of coordinated efforts among various firefighting agencies and volunteer organizations in Cyprus. As the summer months continue, authorities remain vigilant in monitoring fire risks across the region.
In related news, the community has been alerted to the ongoing risk of wildfires, with Cyprus currently on “Red Alert” for fire hazards. Residents are urged to remain cautious and report any signs of fire immediately to local authorities.
As the situation develops, further updates will be provided by local news outlets and the Fire Service.
