**Stolen Matisse Artworks Recovered by Police in Brazil**
Eight illustrations by renowned French artist Henri Matisse, stolen from the Biblioteca Mário de Andrade in São Paulo last year, have been successfully recovered by Brazilian police. The artworks, valued at approximately $200,000 (£148,000), were found on Thursday in a residence located in São Bernardo do Campo, a suburb south of São Paulo.
The recovery of the Matisse artworks comes after a brazen theft that occurred on December 7, 2022. During the incident, two thieves overpowered a security guard and an elderly couple visiting the library, before fleeing with the valuable pieces through the main entrance. In connection with the theft, a 44-year-old male suspect, identified as João Paulo Linhares de Araujo, was arrested at the scene of the recovery. Authorities suspect that he had been storing the stolen artworks on behalf of others involved in the heist.
The investigation into the theft has already led to the arrest of three other individuals. Among them is Laéssio Rodrigues de Oliveira, a 53-year-old man described by Brazilian media as a notorious art thief. Oliveira is believed to have orchestrated the theft and has been in custody since April for his involvement in another criminal case. Additionally, another man and a woman have also been arrested in relation to the library heist.
The Matisse illustrations are part of a limited-edition art book titled *Jazz*, and they were featured in a joint exhibition with the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art. Alongside the Matisse works, five engravings by Brazilian artist Candido Portinari, which were created for a special edition of the novel *Menino de Engenho* by José Lins do Rego, were also stolen during the robbery. As of now, these Portinari works have not been recovered.
The theft took place on the final day of the exhibition titled "From Book to Museum." Reports indicate that the thieves entered the library mid-morning and made their escape towards the nearest metro station shortly after the crime.
Following the recovery of the Matisse illustrations, the local department of culture announced that the artworks have been returned to the library, which has since enhanced its security measures to prevent future incidents.
Matisse is celebrated as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, and the significance of the stolen works has been described by art critics as "incalculable." Portinari, known for his depictions of rural workers and laborers, remains a pivotal figure in Brazilian Modernist art.
