**Storage Batteries to Arrive in Cyprus by January 2027, Energy Minister Says**
Electricity storage batteries are set to be delivered to Cyprus by January 2027, with installation expected to be completed before the summer, according to Energy Minister Michael Damianos. The announcement, made on Sunday, marks a significant step toward enhancing the island's energy infrastructure.
Contracts have been signed with both the battery supplier and the Transmission System Operator (TSO) for the battery storage project, which aims to increase the country’s energy storage capacity by 125 megawatts (MW). This initiative is particularly crucial as it will allow for the storage of renewable energy, mitigating the need to curtail production during periods of excess generation.
Minister Damianos emphasized that the project is designed to address the challenges posed by peak electricity demand, which typically occurs in the summer months. “By 2027, we will be able to store more renewable energy and reduce the need to cut back on generation during high-demand periods,” he stated. The integration of these storage facilities is expected to alleviate pressure on the electricity grid, especially during the evening hours when demand spikes due to increased use of air conditioning.
Currently, Cyprus relies on over 1,000 MW of conventional electricity generation, which is generally adequate during daylight hours. However, as the sun sets and solar energy production ceases, demand often surpasses available capacity. The introduction of battery storage is anticipated to bridge this gap by storing surplus energy generated during the day for use during peak evening hours.
In addition to the 125 MW from the upcoming battery storage facilities, Minister Damianos revealed that agreements have been reached for an additional 150 MW of privately owned battery storage projects, also expected to come online in 2027. Furthermore, the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) is working on its own storage solutions, with a combined capacity of 180 MW. This includes two projects of 80 MW and 100 MW, which are projected to be operational before the summer of 2027.
By the end of 2027, the total battery storage capacity integrated into the national grid is expected to reach several hundred megawatts, significantly enhancing the reliability and sustainability of Cyprus's electricity supply.
When questioned about managing electricity demand until these storage projects are completed, Damianos reassured that the current situation remains manageable. He attributed recent power supply issues to a fault in one of the EAC’s generators, rather than a systemic problem. Both the EAC and TSO are reportedly making concerted efforts to ensure a stable electricity supply with the resources currently available.
The minister noted that the most significant strain on the electricity grid occurs during the two to three hours following sunset. He expressed confidence that, barring any unforeseen breakdowns, the system should be able to cope with the demand until the new storage projects are operational.
The introduction of battery storage technology is a key component of Cyprus's broader energy transition strategy, aimed at increasing the use of renewable energy sources and reducing reliance on conventional fossil fuels. As the island moves towards a more sustainable energy future, the upcoming battery storage facilities are expected to play a vital role in ensuring a reliable and efficient electricity supply for both residential and commercial users.
