For many expats, the dream is a villa with a private pool. But if you’re renting an apartment without one, or you simply want to enjoy the great outdoors without suffering from heatstroke, you are far from out of options. Cyprus is a uniquely geographic destination in that sense. In less than an hour, you can travel from a boiling urban center, or a packed seafront, to the cool, crisp altitude of a pine forest. If you want to beat the heat this summer, here is your essential guide to the island’s best public parks, municipal pools, and high-altitude nature escapes. 1. Public parks When you need a break from the concrete radiating heat but want to stay close to home and enjoy some fresh air, the key is finding dense tree canopy. These green spaces offer massive patches of deep shade and a noticeable drop in temperature. Athalassa National Forest Park (Nicosia): The ultimate green lung of the capital. Spanning across a massive track of eucalyptus and pine trees, Athalassa features a central lake and over 20 kilometers of trails. It is one of the few places in Nicosia where you can completely escape the city sun and find a cool breeze under the trees. The Botanical Gardens are open daily and are free of charge to visit. The Park of Colours (Paphos): This is the largest park on the island, located right in the center of Paphos. It features shaded walkways, botanical gardens, a skate park, tennis courts, and playgrounds. It also has a central cafeteria where you can grab an iced coffee in the shade. Dasoudi Beach (Limassol): For those on the coast, Dasoudi is a local lifesaver. This thick eucalyptus forest runs right along the seafront. It offers the perfect combination of a sea breeze and aromatic shade, making it a prime spot to set up a hammock during the peak afternoon heat. Athalassa National Forest Park 2. Public pools and day pass hacks If you need to submerge yourself in water but want to avoid the salty, crowded beaches, the island’s municipal infrastructure scene has you covered. Nicosia Municipal Swimming Pool: Located in the Agios Andreas area, this large pool is surrounded by tall trees. It has a great community feel, grassy areas to relax on, and affordable entry fees at around €6 for adults. Geroskipou Olympic Swimming Pool (Paphos): A massive, Olympic-standard 50-meter outdoor pool located just on the edge of Paphos. It is highly maintained, features 10 lanes, and is the perfect option on the west coast if you want to swim proper laps without dealing with beach crowds. Olympic Swimming Pool GSZ (Larnaca): Situated right next to the GSZ Stadium, this is Larnaca’s premier outdoor 50-meter training facility. It is easily accessible and offers an excellent, clean environment to exercise and cool down. The Hotel Day-Pass Hack: This is a top tip for anyone living in Cyprus. Many central hotels open their pools to non-guests, so for a set daily fee, you can use their premium sunbeds and facilities. In Limassol, Crowne Plaza has a day pass from around €30; in Nicosia, Cleopatra Hotel lists pool access from €14; and in Paphos, Annabelle has previously offered a minimum-spend day pass, but always call first, because prices and availability can change fast in summer. If you want to really treat yourself, you can buy a day pass at the Columbia Beach Resort in Pissouri for €60, which gives you access to the swimming pool and all of its Hebe Spa facilities. Nicosia Municipal Swimming Pool 3. Nature Escapes: Freezing waters and mountain altitudes One of the best and most unique things about Cyprus is the rapid transition from coast to peak. Within an hour of sweating in a coastal city, you can be sitting at an altitude that might require a light jacket. Adonis Baths Waterfalls (Paphos): Located in a raw, jungle-like ravine in the Paphos region, the water here is famously, beautifully freezing. Because the natural pools are nestled under high cliffs and shaded by dense foliage, the water never gets a chance to heat up. It offers a shocking, instant reset from the summer heat. Adonis Waterfall Kakopetria and Caledonia Waterfalls (Troodos Mountains): If you head into the mountains, there are trails lead to rushing water coming straight off the peaks. The microclimate created by the mountain streams and dense forest can lower the temperature by up to 10°C compared to the coast. The charming village of Kakopetria is usually cool enough to wonder around in and explore at any point in the summer. It is only a 30 minute drive from the Kaledonia Waterfalls, and a real highlight is enjoying lunch at The Mill restaurant, which has tables with a birds-eye view across the village. Try their specialty dish, the fresh grilled trout which is caught locally and is smothered in a rich, savoury sauce made of lemon, butter, and garlic, and most importantly, enjoy eating outside whilst not feeling uncomfortable and sticky. Living in Cyprus during the peak of summer doesn’t mean you have to stay trapped indoors under the air conditioning. By utilising the island’s natural topography and public spaces, you can easily outsmart the intense summer heat.
