Emon had been missing since 6:30pm on 11 June, when he told housemates he was going to Kofinου to work at a chicken production facility. His family reported the same day that he had been kidnapped after a person contacted his father demanding a ransom. According to the remand order, the father received a text message at 22:38 in Bengali reading: “Please save me, otherwise they will kill me.” A brief phone call in Hindi followed. Further messages then demanded €35,000 by Sunday, warning that if the money was not paid the father would “never see your son again” and threatening to remove and sell the victim’s kidney. After the father asked for proof his son was alive, the victim’s phone went dead. Police traced the last signal from the victim’s phone to Kofinου and found his SIM card in the suspect’s handset. They also established that the suspect had been enrolled in a voluntary repatriation programme through the Aliens and Immigration Service and was due to leave for his home country on 16 June 2026, but did not board the flight. An arrest warrant was secured on 20 June and the suspect was arrested the following day in Larnaca. Two mobile phones were found on him; he acknowledged that the second belonged to the victim. A second person arrested in connection with the case was released after no evidence emerged against them. The suspect led police to the victim’s body in the Kofinου area. In his statement he said he first met Emon on 7 June on a bus, where the victim asked him for help finding work and they exchanged numbers. He alleged that when he asked Emon to share his wifi hotspot, Emon refused and insulted him, saying: “No, you are poor, you came from the occupied territories.” The suspect said he went to a supermarket on 9 June and bought a knife with the intention of killing Emon. On 11 June he contacted the victim, falsely offering him work at €50 a day. That evening Emon travelled to Kofinου to meet him. The two walked towards the Kofinου abattoir, where the suspect stabbed Emon multiple times. He then dragged him to where the body was later found and, finding him still alive, strangled him with clothing. The suspect covered the body with straw, threw the backpack to the side of the road, and later led police to where he had discarded the knife and the bloodied jacket he had been wearing. After the killing, the suspect took Emon’s phone and used it to send the ransom demands to the victim’s father. During a forensic examination, two boarding passes and a credit card belonging to Emon were found in the suspect’s possession. The suspect faces charges of premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit a felony, abduction or deprivation of liberty with intent to cause serious harm, extortion, demanding property under threat, and illegal stay in the Republic.
